Windrush Taskforce and exceptional payments
In April 2018, the Home Secretary established the Windrush Taskforce to make immediate arrangements for those who needed help to confirm their immigration status and make it easier to access support.
As part of the support the Taskforce offers, there are a few urgent and exceptional cases where it is appropriate to provide financial assistance in advance of the launch of a Windrush compensation scheme in 2019. This policy will remain in place until the compensation scheme is operational.
For a case to be considered under this exceptional payment scheme they must fulfil the following conditions:
Other factors to be considered where relevant:
Anyone who considers they may be eligible for this assistance should contact the taskforce at Freephone: 0800 678 1925 or email: commonwealthtaskforce@homeoffice.gov.uk
Once a request for an urgent and exceptional payment has been received, the Vulnerable Persons Team within the Taskforce will undertake an initial assessment. This will be considered and prioritised; we aim to advise the claimant of the outcome within ten working days and earlier if possible, with payment made no later than 14 days after if the application is successful.

There is a group of wonderful, committed volunteers in Wokingham who one Sunday afternoon a month arrange for volunteer drivers to take their older guests to a volunteer host’s home where they join a small group for tea, talk and companionship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same and the groups are kept small so that everyone can join in easily and get to know each other properly. It’s a simple idea, but the impact is immeasurable. (Please note: guests are not expected to host any of the tea parties and the service is free).
At the moment, Contact the Elderly don’t have many older guests in the Wokingham group, and the volunteers are concerned that there are people in the community who would really benefit from this service but have just never heard of Contact the Elderly.
Do you know of anyone aged 75 and over who might like to join the Wokingham group? If yes, please click here: https://www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/guest
